Bill Bishop Leaving China and Forecasting Dark Clouds over Beijing

9/9/2015

Yet another colossus leaves China: Bill Bishop, the CEO of China Watchers Inc.
His last Sinica appearance gives an interesting insight in how a long time Beijing resident with US roots perceives the changes in Chinese society combined with the reaction by the American elite.

Bill basically claims that the political consensus of the US elite has shifted from integrating China into the global community towards excluding it. There exists a wide spread perception that the engagement of China in a political dialogue and the participation in international trade has failed. He thinks that the change of the US government in 17 months will bring about change of paradigms in foreign policy directed at China; thus the likelihood of open conflict between the US and China will increase.

Time to bring your offspring out of the country and into a safe environment.

With Jeremy already having left for good to the US, and Kaiser indicating that he will leave in 2016, only David will remain in Beijing. Why is that? Are we really on the wrong side of history when staying in China?
